Basic and Clinical Reasearch in Musculoskeletal Sciences

Graduate PhD Programme #MUSKOS

Different groups – same program

We are committed to creating a sense of community around research training in the Graduate PhD Programme MUSKOS. A sense of community that is evident no matter which research group you are part of.

We welcome PhD students and supervisors of different professional backgrounds who share an interest in the musculoskeletal sciences in a broad sense.

We offer academic training and collaborative opportunities in the scientific study of musculoskeletal disorders and diseases to better understand the ways in which research can improve knowledge, prevention, and treatment in this area.

The MUSKOS programme includes both basic and clinical scientists, and we have a strong focus on translational research that bridges basic and clinical science. Experimental and therapeutic modalities range from immobilization and exercise to drugs and surgery. Enrollment with MUSKOS may also be relevant for you if you focus on how exercising the musculoskeletal system affects other body organs in health or disease.

The Snekkersten research retreat is an absolute MUSKOS highlight. The retreat is our scientific and social celebration of the academic year, and each year several national and international experts are invited to speak, participate, and engage with MUSKOS affiliates. Starting in 2014, the retreat has been held annually and it something everyone looks forward to. The scientific program changes from year to year, but some components are always included. This includes presentations by PhD students with professional feedback, sessions on generic content relevant to all PhD students, such as research methodology and career development, and a dinner featuring social and scientific activities like the famous Snekkersten PhD Cup. Some of the best abstracts submitted to the Snekkersten Retreat are selected for the PhD Cup and the submitting PhD-student is invited to give a 2-minute presentation of the abstract without the use of any audiovisuals.

Physical activity and socializing: the MUSKOS glue

Physical activity and exercise are greatly enjoyed by many affiliated with MUSKOS – not only as an interventional modality for our research – but also as a socializing and networking activity. Many of our scientific activities include some form of physical or other social activity. It is something that we value and try to incorporate for all MUSKOS activities. MUSKOS also has a running club as well as a biking club that arrange ad-hoc activities. It goes without saying that you are also very welcome to the program if you do not have a great interest in physical activity. Socializing can take many forms.

#MUSKOS running and biking

MUSKOS running, and biking clubs meet ad-hoc during the year. In some cases, the clubs are local (e.g., #MUSKOS Running Hvidovre Hospital) who meet locally and across the local research groups to facilitate networking. In other cases, local clubs arrange activities across the whole of MUSKOS, such as run and bike meets in Hareskoven north of Copenhagen, or as part of our annual Snekkersten Research Retreat.
If you want to establish a local MUSKOS running or biking club, send us a brief description of how it is organized, MUSKOS may be able to provide some funding for activities if they are open to all of MUSKOS and include a scientific or career development component. We are very happy to arrange activities in collaboration with other graduate PhD programs to facilitate networking.

Follow MUSKOS social media accounts for updates on these activities and reach out if you would like to be involved.

Contact persons: Postdoc Maria Swennergren Hansen (running), MUSKOS PhD coordinator Mette Merete Pedersen (biking)

#MUSKOS craft beer

MUSKOS craft beer club is a club of people who brew and enjoy – or just enjoy – craft beer. The beer club arranges ad-hoc activities around science and craft beer. In some cases, the activities are held in combination with MUSKOS bike, run, book club, or other MUSKOS activity. MUSKOS craft beer consists of MUSKOS affiliates, MUSKOS alumni, as well as friends of MUSKOS. We are very happy to arrange activities in collaboration with other graduate PhD programs to facilitate networking. For activities where MUSKOS is funding the activity, they must be open to all of MUSKOS and include a scientific or career development component.

Follow MUSKOS social media accounts for updates on these activities and reach out if you would like to be involved.

Contact persons: Senior Researcher Peter Scherling, PhD-student Birk Mygind Grønfeldt, Phd-student Troels Mark-Christensen.

#MUSKOS book clubs

MUSKOS has several local book clubs where people meet to discuss books that are relevant for career development and scientific advancement. It may be books on how to focus on work in a world full of distractions or books about communication and teamwork. Book club meetings typically focus on discussion about how this knowledge can be applied in the scientific setting.

Let us know if you want to set up a local book club at your institution. If you send us a brief description of how it is organized, MUSKOS may be able to provide some funding for the purchase of books. Ideally, one or two copies of a book can be purchased. These copies can be shared at the institution and read by many people enrolled or affiliated with MUSKOS.

Let us know if you have formed a local MUSKOS book club so that we can list it here on the MUSKOS web.

Please find below some examples of books that could be relevant for MUSKOS book clubs.

At "support and well-being" you can find information on different kinds of support for PhD students at The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences provided by The Graduate School and The University of Copenhagen.

Each graduate programme at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences has a PhD coordinator who can help you find your way in the PhD Programme. The PhD coordinator supports the steering committee in the graduate programme, helps the head of the program in coordinating courses and academic and social activities, and is available for guidance of PhD students (via emails, phone, or meetings).

The PhD coordinator #MUSKOS can be contacted with:

  • ideas for social activities to strengthen networking among PhD students in the programme
  • ideas for the activities at the annual meeting
  • questions regarding challenges related to non-academic issues
